For four years, I’ve used Grammarly, the Premium Version, as a freelance web designer and editor. I believe it to be the most effective online grammar checker, and it is effortless to use. I’ll describe its top features and demonstrate how to use it precisely in this review.
I am a professional web design and editor by trade, so I am aware of the value a human editor can add.
However, I continue to use Grammarly frequently to proofread all of my blog posts. I consider my command of English and grammar to be fairly solid, but it’s amazing how easily typos and minute mistakes can appear in anyone’s writing.
Then what is Grammarly? Does it merit it? Can it take the place of a human editor or proof-reader?
In the Grammarly review that follows, I address these concerns as well as others.

You’ve probably heard of Grammarly if you write online in any capacity. It is the most widely used spelling and grammar checker on the internet, with over 10 million daily active users.
What’s the big deal, then? What exactly does Grammarly do?
This is how it goes:
Grammarly examines a text you’ve written and looks for mistakes. Grammar, punctuation, and spelling are covered in the free version, but the premium version goes one step further by providing stylistic and best-writing-practice recommendations.
It may mean the difference between sloppily written, amateurish material and something compelling and clear.

Before publishing anything online, it’s crucial to check your documents for plagiarism using a tool like Grammarly because not all instances of plagiarism are the result of deliberate copying.
Writing Style
Offering hints, suggestions, and advice on your writing style adds that “near-human” touch.
Possibly the most overlooked Grammarly feature. It offers advice on sentence length, overall readability, and other practical tips for writing improvement. This is what you really need if you want to improve as a writer.
Grammarly can help you polish your emails, social media posts, blogs, and formal papers regardless of the type of writing you do—professional, informal, or for fun.
That being said, I believe the following individuals will gain the most from using Grammarly:
- Students
- Bloggers
- Copywriters and Content Marketers
- Professionals and business writers want to create a detailed report, presentation, or email.
Even so, is a Grammar checker necessary?
Who enjoys critiquing other people’s writing? (unsolicited, of course).
But as a web designer and editor, I know how crucial accurate and precise writing is. It’s simple to consider grammar an ancient convention in this day and age of “chat speak,” emojis, and short-form content. However, there is a significant distinction between excellent and poor grammar.
This is why:
- The key is in your message. If your message is unclear, readers will struggle to understand the point you’re trying to make in any writing, from website content and blogs to tweets.
- Your writing embodies who you are. Why take the chance of coming across poorly in your writing because of grammatical errors when this could be easily avoided? Your writing gives the reader a taste of who you are.
- Nothing is lost if you do this. When you use a grammar checker, your writing will be of higher quality. It takes very little time, helps you write better, and makes sure you use the appropriate style and tone to communicate with your audience.
Therefore, an effective online grammar checker is an excellent way for writers to ensure their work is understandable and free of mistakes. Although Grammarly is excellent, it is not flawless.
I’ll go into more detail about some of the benefits and drawbacks of using Grammarly in this review and how to make the most of it.
The three reasons Grammarly is my go-to recommendation
Let’s start with the benefits and explain why I always tell my friends and family to use Grammarly.
1. You don't need to be skilled in computers.
Even in 2019, some people still react to the word “software” (which is why we now use the word “app” instead).
Most of us prefer to stick with what we already know rather than incorporate something new into our routines because we don’t want to deal with anything extra.
I get it.
But Grammarly differs from the majority of other available software. Grammarly has a straightforward user interface and user experience, despite its potential for complexity and advanced functionality. Your grandparents could learn it and start using it in an hour.
There are a few uses for Grammarly (which are covered in more detail below), including:

2. Grammarly Works
Reading my Grammarly review, you probably have one question: Does Grammarly work? I am using it right now writing this Blog.
Grammarly does indeed function. It detects spelling and grammar errors more accurately than any other checker.
That’s ultimately what sells it the most, I think. Software development has never been perfect. Most software and apps will catch the most common mistakes and errors, but anything more complex is up to you.
No matter how complex the error or suggestion is, Grammarly has always gone above and beyond to help.
I was curious as to why. What sets Grammarly apart from similar products I’ve used, and why is it more efficient?
Here are a few intriguing details:
- The co-founders of Grammarly began developing software in the late 1990s, and in 2002, Mydropbox, their first product, was made available. They signed up for almost a thousand universities in just five years.
They concentrated on producing a good that would be useful to everyone. formal and academic writers, informal writers who write daily and students and professionals.
Their in-house team of computational linguists and deep learning engineers constantly works to improve their “good writing” algorithms by analysing millions of pages from research databases.
My favourite aspect of using Grammarly is probably the level of nuance that it can achieve.
(However, technically speaking, Grammarly is not perfect—as I explain further below. As a result, you must pay attention and filter out the incorrect suggestions.)
3. You learn everything you require from it.
All grammar chequers offer the apparent feature of highlighting your errors, but Grammarly Premium goes above and beyond by actually explaining why your errors are incorrect.

This means you will gradually and deliberately improve your writing through Grammarly’s micro-lessons and ensure that your documents, emails, and posts are written using proper English grammar.
The following are just a few of the frequent grammar and stylistic recommendations I’ve encountered using Grammarly:
- Avoid comma splices for the best comma placement!
- Verbal overuse
- Redundancy in the use of words (words like “really” and “actually” frequently add little to no meaning)
- Language and sentence construction
- Misuse of adverbs
- Uncertain modifiers
- confusing lie with lay
- improper or unclear pronouns
- long sentences and verbosity
- Using “Could of” instead of “could have” is a tautology.
There is no better tool than Grammarly if English is your second language or if you want an excellent daily lesson in grammar.
The five ways to utilise Grammarly
Do I have to copy and paste everything I type into a text box for it to check my writing, you might be wondering. Because that would be pretty irritating…
No, is the answer. There are undoubtedly more practical approaches to take.
You must have internet access to use Grammarly because it is an internet-based tool.
The following are some methods you can use to check your work:
1. The Grammarly web tool
The first option is to copy your writing and paste it into the Grammarly online tool. To do this, click “New” in the dashboard. A blank page will then appear.
Copy your writing into the page, then wait for the website to do its magic for a moment or two. The programme reads, evaluates, and corrects your paper in seconds.
You can set the settings for your “Goals.”
You can upload a finished document straight to the website if you have one. Select a copy from your computer and click “Upload” rather than “New,” Grammarly will perform the same content analysis.
Alternatively, you can start writing on the Grammarly website, and the programme will check it as you go.
2. Desktop App
It is possible to proofread your writing using a desktop application if you use Windows or macOS. Google Chrome is my prefered browser because it enables you to add extensions directly to your browser.
Visit the download page, download the app for your operating system, and then use it much like you would the online version by following the installation instructions.
3. Microsoft Word
Additionally, a Grammarly add-in can be used directly from Microsoft Word.
To add it to Word, go to the add-in page and follow the instructions. The add-in will check your writing as you type once it is operational.
I typically use Grammarly in this manner. It was easy to instal, and I found using it very intuitive. However, remember that you must be online to use it in Word.
Important: Grammarly for Microsoft Word on Mac will no longer be updated. We suggest switching to Grammarly for Mac, which supports integrating multiple applications and websites, including Microsoft Office apps. Alternatively, if you work on longer documents, we encourage you to try Grammarly Editor.
4. Browser Extension
Use of a browser extension is among the simplest ways to use Grammarly.
You can access this extension by clicking a link on the homepage or by searching for Grammarly in the Chrome Web Store.
Add the extension to Chrome like any other extension, and whenever you use it on various websites, it will automatically check your writing.
This includes Google Docs for those who prefer Google’s word processor and Gmail, which helps you when you are typing an email.
Can I connect my Grammarly account to my Google, Facebook, or Apple accounts?
A single Grammarly account can be connected to your Google, Facebook, or Apple account. Remember that the email address you used to sign up for your Grammarly account must also be used for your social media accounts.
5. On Mobile Phones
On Android and iOS smartphones, Grammarly’s mobile keyboard lets you get writing recommendations.
The Grammarly iPhone Editor and Grammarly for Safari for iPhone are available on iOS and combined into a single app.
Support is available for any iOS devices running iOS 12.2 or later. Find instructions to install Grammarly on your smartphone.
Only iPhones running iOS 15 or later may use Grammarly with Safari.
Regarding Android, Grammarly is appropriate for any gadgets running Android 7.0 (Nougat) or later. Additionally, tablets are supported. Please follow the instructions to install Grammarly for Android.
What is the price of Grammarly?
Is Grammarly completely free?
Yes, Grammarly may be used for free.
One of the things I like about Grammarly is that you can use it for free. Grammarly’s free edition has no limits, which means you may use it indefinitely with no time limit or trial period.
And, as I’ll explain below, Grammarly’s free version is rather good.
To use all of Grammarly’s capabilities, you must upgrade to Grammarly Premium or Grammarly Business.

Now that you know how much Grammarly costs, you’re undoubtedly thinking if the free version is sufficient for you. Should you pay the extra money for Grammarly Premium?
Read on for my opinion and an in-depth evaluation of Grammarly Premium.
Free Version: What do you get?
Unlike some programs, where the free edition or free trial is a poor and severely limited version of itself, Grammarly’s free version is rather good.
It gives you the fundamentals you need to build your writing foundation, including a complete spelling, grammar, and punctuation checker that is more robust than the standard spell check included in most word processors.
When the program detects possible errors, it underlines them in red. Using the online interface, you may go through each issue by clicking the areas on the right (Grammar, Punctuation, etc.). You may also learn more by clicking on each highlighted fault.
The free version will spot the most simple errors in your writing while recommending terms you may have meant to use. It shows spelling errors, for example:

Grammarly recognizes different writing Dialects, spelling, grammar, and punctuation differences in American, British, Canadian, and Australian / New Zealand English.
It will also draw attention to convention flaws. If you’re writing in Australian English, it’ll emphasize ‘color.’
You’ll also see how many errors Grammarly Premium discovered in your work. Importantly, you will not be able to see these in the free version and will need to upgrade to see them.
What are the immediate advantages of adopting Grammarly?
You’ll notice a change in your writing as soon as you start using Grammarly. The following are the primary pros of using the free checker:
- It may be used in “real-time,” indicating errors as you write, or it can be used at the end to ensure no mistakes have been neglected.
- Clear explanations on how to modify or reorganize sentences.

What about the Premium Version? Is Grammarly Premium a good investment?

When it comes to online grammar checkers, Grammarly Premium is unrivalled.
To begin, the premium version includes everything available in the free version. Then there’s everything else.
Grammarly Premium contains a far more significant number of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and context checks. Style, tone, and clarity improvements for writing at work and school. It will search for the following in addition to the tests in the free version:

- Tone adjustments
- Plagiarism detection
- Word choice
- Formality level
- Fluency
- Additional advanced suggestions
Grammarly’s premium edition, according to the company, goes beyond grammar to guarantee that everything you write is clear and engaging.
Using Grammarly Premium will not ensure that your writing is clear and exciting. No grammar checker can transform hurried and sloppy writing into a work of art.
On the other hand, Grammarly Premium has several valuable features that I use regularly. When I run Grammarly Premium over a piece of writing, it always gives a few more valuable ideas, which I include in my content. I find that utilising the premium version improves my writing.
It also displays precise details about your grammar faults in the pop-up window, which the free edition does not.
Set Goals - Tailor Your Audience
However, my favourite feature of Grammarly Premium is the flexibility to choose the suggestions and comments I receive by setting my Goals for my Audience.
As a web designer and writer, feedback is always valuable. However, any comments must include the reasons for the writing or why the content was created in the first place.
With these individualised goals, Grammarly appears to be attempting to transform its AI editor into something more human.
Here’s how to fully utilise this function.
When you start a new document, you may change the parameters to create writing objectives depending on:
- Domain (Academic, Business, General, Email, Casual, Creative)
- Intent (Inform, Describe, Convince, Tell A Story)
- Audience (General, Knowledgeable, Expert)
- Formality (Informal, Neutral, Formal)
By adjusting these parameters, Grammarly can determine which errors to flag and which to overlook. Grammarly will also provide some valuable insights based on these objectives.
Let’s go through some of these options and why I believe they’re significant:
- Audience: When it comes to content delivery, your audience is everything. When your audience is an expert in the topic, using jargon and highly technical, industry-specific phrases may be effective. However, it may be quite startling when they are the general public.
- Formality: The distinction between formal and casual writing styles can make or break a paper, assignment, project, or email. You must understand when and when not to utilise specific phrases and vocabulary.
- Domain: What kind of writing do you do: Academic, Business, General, Email, Casual and Creative?
- Intent: With options like “Inform,” “Describe,” “Convince,” and “Tell A Story,” you know the programme will try to figure out why you built up a narrative the method you did.
While their individualised feedback algorithms aren’t flawless, it’s interesting to see how they’re progressing from a simple grammatical check tool to an all-around text analyst.
It’s the closest thing to having a real-life writing coach explaining linguistic nuances while you go through your writing.
Is Grammarly Premium Worth The Money?
Grammarly Premium is a worthwhile investment for me.
A free version is a great tool, and it is preferable to not having a second set of eyes review your writing. It will detect more spelling and grammatical errors than a standard free checker.
If you’re a writer on a tight budget, try installing Grammarly and putting it to the test.
However, like with most things in life, paying for something is preferable to free alternatives.
Grammarly Premium will detect different spelling and grammatical errors in your writing. You’ll also get criticism on how to improve your writing style and context for your blunders.
I pay for the premium version because I greatly value the additional features.
When producing a Website Article, Blog on editing, proofreading, and writing, typos and minor errors mustn’t appear in my work.
In short, Grammarly Premium is well worth the extra cost if you take your writing seriously!
What can be implemented to improve it?
I can confidently recommend Grammarly, but that doesn’t imply it’s without flaws. What I believe might be improved is as follows:
- The premium Pricing is prohibitively expensive for infrequent authors. If you’re a casual writer who only needs to use Grammarly sometimes but still wants all of the premium features, US$12.00 per month may be a bit costly. That being said, the free edition of Grammarly still does a beautiful job, but depending on your writing, you may miss out on refining the structure of the text, tone, and so on.
- A free trial to test out premium features. That brings me to my second point: a free trial for premium customers may be a fantastic way to introduce the additional capabilities and allow consumers to experience the impact it makes in their work.
Grammarly does not currently provide this service. I can see how inexperienced writers could be hesitant to invest monthly or yearly without evaluating the features.
HOWEVER: Grammarly does provide free trials of Grammarly Premium to individual users regularly. When a free trial is available before upgrading to Grammarly Premium, you’ll notice the option to join on their website or by email from your subscription with the Free Trial Offer (don’t miss it when it’s accessible). - It is currently only available in English. Grammarly is not a tool for you if you write in another language. Compared to some of the rivals, it would be wonderful to see this implemented in the future.
- Accuracy. Grammarly is excellent at detecting mistakes or typos in writing, but it cannot replace the human eye in terms of accuracy (and maybe a grammar checker never will). As a result, I constantly manually evaluate Grammarly’s suggestions (more about that below).
Grammarly's performance in comparison to a human editor
This was the most exciting element of my Grammarly review to write about!
I work as a professional web designer and editor; I write Web Pages and create Articles and Blogs in English and German periodicals. I understand the significance of clear, precise, and error-free writing.
Although Grammarly is good at detecting some errors, it is not a human editor. As an editor, I can see that robots have a long way to go before competing with people.
For starters, Grammarly will let inevitable mistakes get through, even if they appear to be minor. Some errors are more difficult for machines to detect.
For example, you may use a perfectly written term that is not appropriate in the context of the paragraph. Alternatively, you may say someone has blonde hair in one section and brown hair in the next.
Grammarly will not catch these errors, but a decent human editor would.
A human is required for more complex difficulties like paragraph length, tone of voice, and the meaning of phrases and sentences.
English is a complex language to write correctly and much more challenging to proofread.
English grammatical rules are flexible, and successful writing and narrative ingredients are very contextual. Human vision will consistently outperform the rigidity of automated technologies.
As a result, while Grammarly is an excellent tool for informal writing, it is unsuitable for professional writing. Professional editing is essential when writing a dissertation, a critical business document, or a book.
Finally, Grammarly and human editors are not competitors. You don’t have to choose between them. They are helpful for several forms of writing.
Grammarly vs. Competitors
Grammarly isn’t the only online grammar checker available to you. It is, nevertheless, the most popular, with nearly 30 million users in 2020.
31 million people visit the Grammarly website every month. Because Grammarly’s used mainly through its online app, a large portion of this traffic is attributed to the 6.9 million daily app users.
Grammar chequers with features comparable to Grammarly include ProWritingAid, Ginger, and WhiteSmoke.
They, like Grammarly, are full-fledged grammar, punctuation, and spelling chequers.
How do they stack up against Grammarly? Are they feasible options? Is there a clear champion in the field of robot grammar checking?

ProWritingAid
Pros
- Probably the most incredible Grammarly substitute available.
- It focuses on enhancing your writing and addressing spelling and grammatical errors. It accomplishes this by looking for faults with sentence structure, clichés, overused words, repetitive phrases, and a lack of sentence length variation.
- It gives you a full assessment of your writing that focuses on these “larger picture” difficulties. This may be valuable for larger writing pieces like novels or essays.
- I appreciate their emphasis on style. Every day, as an editor, I come across lines and sections that aren’t technically wrong, but the language is unnatural and difficult to read. ProWritingAid’s style suggestions might help enhance all types of complicated writing.
- Outstanding value for money. The Premium version costs $79 per year (Lifetime option one-off – $399), while the Premium+ version (which includes a plagiarism checker) costs $89 (Lifetime option one-off $499). Grammarly is far more expensive, costing $139.95 per year.
Cons
- It sacrifices simplicity for comprehensiveness.
- It’s not as sophisticated or user-friendly as Grammarly, a pure spelling and grammar checker.
- It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer number of style information available. While their advice may be valuable if you’re writing a book or an essay, it’s usually unneeded for everyday writing like emails and social media postings.
- ProWritingAid has improved and now easily integrates with MS Word/Outlook, Google Docs, Scrivener, Open Office, and Final Draft so you can edit wherever you write. Their Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari browser extensions let you check your writing on almost every website, including Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, Medium, Wattpad and more.
Hemingway
Do you need a free grammar checker? Consider Hemingway Editor, one of the greatest free grammar chequers with several sophisticated features. This website and desktop programme evaluates your writing for readability using the Flesch-Kincaid reading level, which typically suggests aiming for simple, conversational language to pretty easy-to-read stuff (grades 6 through 8 on the scale).
This application will search for adverbs, passive phrases, and complicated or lengthy sentences in the material. It highlights errors in different hues, allowing you to modify them in real time. The main disadvantage of this free tool is that you must copy and paste your content into the editor; it does not scan text in emails or other documents.
Ginger
Pros
- It includes a translator that allows you to translate your writing across 60 languages, which Grammarly does not.
- On a practical level, a translator might benefit someone who has to write in languages other than English. For example, you might write in Spanish, translate to English, and check for spelling and grammatical mistakes with Ginger.
- You will receive your dictionary. This means you may tell Ginger not to mark particular words as incorrect. This is beneficial if you utilise your novel’s odd character names or technical language.
- Grammarly costs $139.95 for an annual membership, whereas Ginger costs $84

- Although Ginger has comparable features to Grammarly, it is not as simple to use and has an unappealing layout.

- WhiteSmoke Premium annual subscription is $79.99, whereas Grammarly’s is $139.95.

Why Grammarly is Better
On the surface, these grammar chequers appear to be severe competitors to Grammarly.
Grammar, spelling, and punctuation checks such as ProWritingAid, Ginger, and WhiteSmoke are all useful. They also have some extra functions that Grammarly does not offer.
ProWritingAid gives you more detailed criticism of your writing style. Ginger has a language translator, while WhiteSmoke includes professional templates to assist you in creating professional papers.
And they’re all less expensive than Grammarly.
However, I believe that Grammarly is the most outstanding online grammar checker. The explanation is simple: it is the most user-friendly and intuitive.
Grammarly is a more aesthetically pleasing, streamlined, and functional product than its three primary competitors. In comparison, they all have a clunkiness about them.
The Grammarly desktop software, in particular, looks beautiful, and the interface is handy with its simple iconography. With a single click, you can instantly discover the mistakes, explain the error, and select whether to apply or delete them.
Grammarly is also relatively simple to set up. When I’m in my browser, it verifies everything I type with a few clicks (I use Google Chrome). It merely operates in the background.
It’s hardly surprising that Grammarly is more visually appealing and user-friendly than its competitors. It’s just a larger organisation with more significant resources.
Consider this. Imagine how much they’ve invested in R&D and design across their website, apps, and browser extensions if they can afford to spend millions on those beautiful TV advertisements you’ve almost surely seen.
Grammarly would have all the nukes if internet grammar-checking became an arms competition.
I usually go with the bigger guys since they have more support and are faster at releasing bug patches, new features, application integration, etc.
When it comes to letting a robot edit my writing, though, I want the most user-friendly tool. I write this blog as part of my employment, and I need my workflow to be as efficient as possible.
That’s why I like Grammarly.
Is Grammarly safe to use?
People are anxious (rightly so) about whether Grammarly safeguards their work.
Grammarly saves your work on its servers so that proofreaders may access it, but if you erase the content from your account, it is also wiped from the server. Throughout the process, your work stays yours.
Grammarly encountered a few challenges with data privacy and glitches in 2018, but according to all sources, their team responded fast and dealt with the issues.

Before I conclude this Grammarly review, I want to underline that you must still personally evaluate its suggestions.
In other words, you can’t rely on Grammarly to get it right every time.
Grammarly is not a flawless grammar checker. It nearly wholly detects fundamental mistakes and typos, but as things grow sophisticated, it can make some perplexing and wrong suggestions.
This is hardly unexpected given that the English language is full of strange conventions and inconsistent norms, and grammatical rules are sometimes supposed to be broken.
So, when using Grammarly, have your wits about you and pay attention. Examine its recommendation, read the explanation if necessary, and, if in doubt, Google it.
I still do that occasionally, even though I’ve been a web designer and editor for many years.
Is Grammarly worth it, in my opinion?
You’ve read my Grammarly review, so you know I enjoy it and use it when I write my Web Designs and Blogs / Articles.
It isn’t flawless, and it will never be able to replace a skilled human editor. However, it performs admirably for its intended purpose. And it surely helps you when rewriting sentences and correcting spelling errors. I don’t believe I can live without it any longer.
So, should you employ it?
Grammarly, in my opinion, is a fantastic tool for practically any writer.
The free edition is ideal for everyone who creates brief bits of text, from bloggers to students to people who send emails regularly.
The Premium edition is convenient for anyone creating more professional, longer-form material. However, if your paper is meant for publication (such as a dissertation or book) or will be viewed by key stakeholders (such as a working document), I wouldn’t put all of my eggs in Grammarly’s basket.
I recommend the premium edition to anyone learning English as a second language.
It’s elementary to make mistakes with the complexities of English, and Grammarly detects many (but not all) of them. It not only highlights errors but also proposes changes and explanations, making it an excellent tool for improving your written English.
Verdict: Grammarly is worth downloading if you want to add an extra layer of checks to your writing or if you want to enhance your writing by being more aware of common flaws that degrade it.
